Biomedical engineering and vision is the main focus of Dr. Yagi's research. He has conducted research on a visual prosthesis, which is an artificial organ to restore the sight of blind patients with electrical stimulation to the visual nervous system. A second focus is human interface using biological signals such as EOG (electrooculogram) or EEG (electroencephalogram) for communicating better between a human and a computer. A third focus is a bio-mimetic robot vision system. A more complete list of publications can be obtained in his curriculum vitae.

Dr. Yagi earned his Ph.D. in Electro-Mechanical Engineering from Nagoya University, Japan, in 1996 before beginning a postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN), also in Japan. His career took him to Nagoya University from 1998 to 2001, where he served as an assistant professor. During this period, he partnered with SeaStar Corporation to commercialize an eye-gaze interface, which successfully entered the market in 2002. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Yagi was invited by NIDEK Co., Ltd. in 2001 to lead a national research project on visual prosthesis under the support of Japan's governmental agency, NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization). By 2004, he had completed the first prototype of the visual prosthesis. Transitioning to RIKEN, Dr. Yagi served as a research scientist and concurrently held a visiting research scientist position at the University of Tokyo's Research Center fo Advanced Science and Technology from April 2004 to March 2005. Since September 2005, he has been a faculty member at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. Additionally, he maintained an appointment as a visiting research scientist at RIKEN until 2014.

In recognition of his contributions to education and research, Dr. Yagi was awarded the Fulbright visiting scholarship in 2012 and 2013, during which time he served as a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA. Continuing his commitment to international education, he has been involved in supporting higher education in Cambodia (2014-) and Laos (2019-) as a JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) specialist. Dr. Yagi's dedication to advancing engineering education has been acknowledged through prestigious awards. In 2020, he received the Engineering Education Award from the Japan Society for Engineering Education (JSEE) and the JSEE AWARD in the same year. Since April 2022, Dr. Yagi has held the position of professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan.
