A Study of the Flow from a Plane which Oscillate in Water

In a small area, it is difficult to generate flow since existing techniques like propeller and compressor are too large to use. Therefore, it is needed to develop a new way to generate flow. One of the ways is to induce a flow using vibrating plate. In this study, it is aimed to clarify the flow induced by the vibrating plate with low frequency and large amplitude.

The experimental setup is shown in Fig.1. The circular vibration plate which is placed at one end of the vibration generator is set tangential to the surface of the water in the tank. This movie shows the movie of the flow in the tank when 50 (Hz) sinusoidal vibration was applied. Amplitude varied from 1 to 5 (mm). When the amplitude was 1 or 2 (mm), a jet-like downward flow was generated just under the vibration plate. If the amplitude becomes larger, the disturbed flow was developed. Finally when the amplitude was 5 (mm), the direction of the flow turned to upward. It was found that when the frequency of the vibration plate was larger, the direction of the flow changed at the smaller amplitude.

Fig.1 Epuepment Explanation

We are currently studying and discussing the mechanism of the change in the direction of the flow.
